BIKES ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Being even more mobile: By bike within the GVH
Bike and GVH – this fits together perfectly: If you plan a trip to the countryside, if you just want to take the bike for a certain route section or if in case of sudden rain you want to continue your journey in a dry way, you can take your bike onto buses and trams. All transport companies of the GVH offer special places for bikes.
From Monday to Friday from 08:30 a.m. until 03:00 p.m. and from 07:00 p.m. until 06:30 a.m. of the following day as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays all day, it is possible to take bicycles along on the vehicles within the tariff area of the GVH free of charge.
To make travelling as comfortable as possible, we ask our passengers to be considerate towards each other. Because walking frames, wheelchairs and children's push chairs always have higher priority over bicycles. Our interactive video on harmonie.gvh.de (available in German language only) shows you how to behave correctly.
Information on when and where you can take your bike, you can find in a compact map (available in German language only). It can even be slipped into a trouser pocket! Further information on the conditions of carriage of bikes can be found in our Flyer (also available in German language only).
Which rules apply at which transport company is shown in the following:
ÜSTRA: All good things come in threes.
In the buses and trams of the ÜSTRA, up to three bikes can be taken with you – provided that they do not exceed the customary dimensions. Special constructions such as tandems are not being transported. Folding bicycles, provided that they are taken folded together, shall not be regarded as bicycles but as hand luggage and can be transported on all lines and at any time. Owners require no additional ticket.
Boarding is possible at high-level platforms and in the tunnel stops. The bicyclist is liable for damages caused to other passengers – for instance dirt due to bicycle chains.
regiobus: Trip by bus and bike
regiobus vehicles can transport max. 2 bicycles at the same time – provided there is enough room at the back of the entrance area. Bicycles may only be placed in the marked multi-purpose areas and must be kept hold during the journey. Wheelchairs and children's push chairs always have higher priority. Bicycles can therefore no longer be transported in case the room for passengers with wheelchairs, walking frames or children's push chairs will be occupied. Folded folding bikes are regarded as hand baggage and are always being transported. Taking your bike with you on regiobus vehicles is basically free of charge.
In the bicycle season from April to October regiobus offers a special service for bicyclists: The "Fahrradbus" circles the "Steinhuder Meer" on an hourly base and offers place for 16 bikes. You can enter or leave with your bike and therefore combine cycling and going by bus. In the summer months, the "Fahrradbus" runs every day. During the other months it runs at the weekends and public holidays. Further information on the "Fahrradbus" can be found here (available in German language only).
